MUMBAI, August 10: Crime branch sleuths arrested a top hitman of the Chotta Rajan gang and recovered arms from a hideout at Parel on Sunday afternoon.

Officers of Unit Three of the crime branch laid a trap near KEM Hospital, Parel, for Vilas Baliram Vaidya, alias Kaliya. He was nabbed after a six hour vigil. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate DR Bhosale has remanded Vaidya to police custody till August 17.

Vaidya reportedly admitted that he was associated with the Babya Mayekar gang before switching allegiance to the Malayasia-based Chotta Rajan. The accused told the police that he was acting on direct instructions from the ganglord, added the police.

Vaidya revealed the location of Mayekar’s hideout near KEM hospital, from where a .45 foreign-made revolver and 19 live cartridges were recovered from him. The police fear that a large cache of arms are concealed in the area.

In another operation, Unit V officers arrested Akram Ashraf Sheikh at Reay Road on Sunday. Darukhana, near Reay Roadstation, was the area of operation for 24-year-old Sheikh, a member of the Kalu Kamparia gang. He was involved in the murder of one Abdul Rahim Karim Khan at Tardeo in 1996 and a series of dacoities.
