MUMBAI, September 15: Rattled by a series of four `street robberies’ involving banks in three months, the Mumbai police have set up a special crack team after the daring Rs 52.95 lakh robbery at Vile Parle last week.

The additional commissioner of police, central region, S B Pardhi told Express Newsline, “We have formed a special team of 20 officers handpicked from zone-IV and zone-VIII region to track the robbers and co-ordinate the investigation into the robberies.”

So far such crack teams were headed by a police officer of the rank of an inspector, however, the series of undetected robberies with similar modus operandi has foxed the cops. Such crackdown and intensive police efforts were witnessed earlier in the Gulshan Kumar killing last year.

In an unprecedented move, the special team will be led by an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police assisted by eight police inspectors and sub-inspectors and constables.

ACP N S Nikam, Vakola division, will lead police inspector N RPuntambekar of the Mahim police station, S S Shirsat of the Shivaji police station, M V Akloskar from the Dadar police station, M S Mane from the Vakola police station and Kulkarni from the Vile Parle police station.

Pardhi said the idea behind selecting police officers from various police stations is to not only tap their resources but to keep a watch on railway terminals, airports, bus terminals and other exit points. Their efforts has already shown results with the recovery of the two vehicles used in the robbery from a by-lane in Vakola area on Saturday along with the weapons used by the dacoits.
