Almost making the party’s anti-Congress move in Kerala the guiding principle, the CPI-M today ruled out the possibility of an alliance with the Congress in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh.

‘‘We are going for some seat adjustments with the CPI and the Janata Dal (Secular) and are open to other non-Congress secular parties,’’ CPI-M Politburo member Prakash Karat said, after the two-day Central Committee meeting.

Explaining the stance, which once more overruled the Jyoti Basu-Somnath Chatterjee initiative to float a loose anti-BJP alliance including all major opposition parties for the polls, Karat rued: ‘‘Close coordination within Parliament is one thing, but that does not mean we agree with everything they do!’’

The Central Committee, he emphasised, has endorsed the view that the CPI-M can only associate with parties it has earlier worked with, ‘‘with whom we do not clash’’. The meeting left the issue of an alliance (with the Congress) for the LS polls.

‘‘We felt it is too early to decide on tactical alliance, which will be taken up later,’’ Karat said, adding that a discussion on the issue was deferred as chances of having an early Lok Sabha looks remote, given the BJP’s situation in Uttar Pradesh.

Endorsing Kerala unit secretary Pinarayi Vijayan’s move to support Karunakaran against the Antony government, Karat said: ‘‘If the division (within the Congress) gets formalised, we (the CC) have authorised our Kerala unit to take appropriate stand.”
