A day after CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri hinted at pulling the rug from under the feet of the UPA government if it did not adhere to the Common Minimum Programme, the party’s West Bengal state secretary warned not to treat this as an empty threat.

‘‘If the government sticks to the Common Minimum Programme, which reflects the aspirations of the common people, we are with them. But if it does not, we are not with them. Let there be no misunderstanding on that,’’ said CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas at the party headquarters here.

A few days ago, Yechuri had said during a television interview that the Left would ‘‘bite very strongly’’ if the UPA government strayed from the Common Minimum Programme..

‘‘We are unhappy that quite a few budget proposals, for example the hike in FDI cap in telecom sector, are not in tune with the CMP. This is not acceptable to us,’’ Biswas said.

‘‘We endorsed the CMP because it reflected the aspirations of the common people. If the UPA government wants to survive, it will have to respect the common people’s aspirations,’’ Biswas added.
