CALCUTTA, DEC 5: The dissolution of the Parliament and general election likely to be held some time in early March next, threatens to force the CPM to postpone its 16th party congress slated for February next year.

According to party sources, the all-powerful Central Committee members of the party are meeting on December 21 and 22 to discuss the issue and likely to take a final decision on the date of the party congress.

However, speaking to The Indian Express, Anil Biswas, the Central Committee member and editor of party mouthpiece, Ganashakti, said, “So far there’s no change in the schedule of the party congress and the Central Committee members are meeting this month to take a stock of the political situation and take a final decision on the issue.” Refuting the press reports on postponement, Biswas cautioned, “But before the panel’s decision, we have no reason to believe that the party is planning a deferral.”
