Veteran CPI(M) leader Harkrishen Singh Surjeet, 93, is in a critical condition. He was admitted to a private hospital in Noida on July 7 following a lung infection, fever and diarrhoea. His condition has deteriorated and his kidneys have stopped functioning. “He is now on life support system,” said Dr Purushottam Lal, chairman & chief cardiologist, Metro Hospital.
In May, Surjeet was admitted to a hospital with similar problems. He had made a remarkable recovery then, despite slipping into coma for several days. Hospital sources said he has been suffering from a recurrence of lung and urinary tract infections. “He has developed septicemia due to persistence of pneumonia, resulting from low immunity, poor general condition and advanced age,” said Dr Lal. Surjeet’s right kidney was removed in 2005, following detection of cancer.
