The Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) today ordered media to show restraint in its ‘‘unauthorised’’ publication or telecast of evidence recorded in court proceedings in the Bollywood-underworld nexus case.

Designated Judge A.P. Bhangale warned that deliberate violation of this order would result in the court taking stern measures, including barring the media from attending the proceedings and initiation of action under the Contempt of Courts Act.

It was argued that the media countrywide has lapped up the conversations and exposed names of witnesses. They said trial by media has a tendency to interfere in the administration of justice.

Judge Bhangale said the media must have a sense of propriety and balance and not comment on evidence in part-heard proceedings. They should report fairly only the court proceedings and interviews given by responsible lawyers.
