The Gwalior Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has asked the CBI to take over the probe into the Chetna Sharma murder case from the Criminal Investigation Department. The 29-year-old Sub-Inspector was found dead in her official quarters in the Bhind Police Lines on November 30, 2006 with her service revolver beside her body.
Though the police initially said it was a case of suicide, her father Kedarnath Sharma claimed that Bhind SP Rajababu Singh was behind the murder. He said Singh had been harassing his daughter for long, often insisting that she travel with him. The IPS officer was then asked to go on leave and transferred to Indore as Commandant of an SRP battalion. The Government had asked the CID to probe the matter after the matter was raised in the Assembly. Subsequently, the CID registered a case of abetment to suicide against Singh. In his defence, Singh suggested that Sharma’s family had run up huge debts and they expected her to repay them. There were discrepancies in the investigations carried out by the local police and the CID.
