SATARA, JANUARY 27: Sessions Judge A D Bhosale on Thursday rejected the bail plea of former Maharashtra minister Udayanraje Bhosale, who is charged with murdering Nationalist Congress Party activist Sharad Lehve during the State Assembly elections last year.

Bhosale, 13th descendent of Chhatrapati Shivaji, was arrested on September 11 last year with 14 others and remanded to police custody from time to time. He was recently admitted to Satara civil hospital for heart ailment and has been undergoing treatment there.

While defence lawyers argued that the accused should be let off on bail as he has been in custody for four months, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam opposed Bhosale’s plea on the ground that custodial interrogation was still needed in view of fresh information that had come to light.

Bhosale, who unsuccessfully contested on the BJP ticket from Satara, pleaded that he has been "falsely" implicated in the crime. He claimed that at the time of alleged murder, he was in Hotel Rajtara and hadnot ventured out for a long time.

The prosecution, however, contended that Lehve was supporter of Udayanraje’s uncle Abhaysingh Bhosale, who had contested as an NCP candidate. On the eve of the election, Lehve was seen moving around in a gypsy van. He was spotted by the accused and his supporters who allegedly assaulted Lehve with an iron rod. Lehve was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead.
