Two additional commissioners of Ahmedabad, who successfully quelled the post-Godhra violence in the city, were among 41 senior police officers transferred on Thursday.

Satish Sharma and Satish Varma had been put in charge of riot-torn areas on May 10, 2002. With Commissioner K.R. Kaushik, the Sharma-Varma jodi, as they came to be known, had cracked down on rioters in a manner that was described as strict but fair. They brought the riots under control in weeks. Less than a year on, they have been moved out. Varma has been made deputy inspector-general for the border range. Sharma’s new post is yet to be announced.

Sharma, who was in charge of Ahmedabad’s Sector-I, was replaced by Joint Commissioner P.C. Thakur, and Varma, who was in charge of Sector-II, by Additional Commissioner (Administration) Keshav Kumar.
