Cops’ transfer no punishment, says family

Rizwanpur Rehman’s family members are not happy with the transfer of the five police officers. They feel dismissal of the officers would have set the records straight. Instead, the family considers the High Court’s order for a CBI probe, a cause for celebration.

“We had been asking for a CBI probe all along and the High Court’s order was a victory. We have heard of the removal of cops, but we wanted them to be suspended. If it is a transfer, then it does not make much sense. Transfer is not any punishment,” said Zahida Rehman, Rizwanur’s sister-in-law.

As news of the Chief Minister’s announcement spread, there was celebration among Rizwanur’s students and colleagues at Arena Multimedia where the former worked as a graphic designer. “The removal of the senior officers was the least they could have done. It is not a severe punishment, but the Chief Minister took so long to take this decision,” said Afsar Alam, a student at Arena Multimedia.

Meanwhile, a flurry of activity had set in at the St Xavier’s College, the alma mater of Rizwanur. The volunteers, who had organised the candle light vigil in his memory on the pavement outside the college, now plan to hold a thanksgiving ceremony as a tribute to the citizens of Kolkata who had condemned the incident.

The volunteers will now chalk out a different course of action to register their demand, which they will announce on Thursday. “There’s no question of stopping with the protest, as the case is far from over. We might change the way we are protesting now,” said Ipshita Mukherjee, a volunteer at the candlelight vigil.

Meanwhile, the CBI will be registering a case in connection with the death on Thursday, following which a special team will be formed. “We have received the copy of the order. We held meetings with legal experts regarding registering the case and the procedure of the investigations. We are yet to form a special team that will investigate the case,” said Arun Kumar, joint director, CBI.

Apart from the court order, the sleuths also studied the petition filed by Rizwanur’s mother Kishwar Jehan. The CBI Special Crime Branch also forwarded the copy of the order to its Delhi headquarters.

The High Court also asked the CBI to place a report in the case within two months. The official also said if the CBI ended up arresting anybody in the case, then the person will be produced in the CBI court. However, the agency will have to place a report before the High Court according to the interim order.

No response for panel

Seven days have passed after the publication of its public notice, but the Justice Alok Chakraborty Commission of Inquiry, which is probing the death of Rizwanur Rehman, has not received any response. The Commission has appealed to the people, organisations and institutions to furnish information about Rizwanur’s death before October 31. The Commission is scheduled to begin its hearing from November 1. “We are banking on the response from individuals to start our inquiry. But not a single person has turned up with any information yet,” said Amit Das, secretary of the Judicial Commission.
