BATALA, Sept 29: The Batala police have suspended six police personnel including an assistant sub inspector on the charge of dereliction of duty today. Due to their negligence a life term prisoner had escaped from the police custody from district courts at Gurdaspur yesterday.
According to the police, Dilbagh Singh alias Bagha, a resident of Daabanwali village was facing life term conviction in Gurdaspur district jail under Section 302 IPC since last year. He was brought in the district courts for prosecution in a case of TADA and Arms Act, along with four others.
The sources said the while four accused were deposited back in the jail, Dilbagh Singh left allegedly with the permission of the ASI from the court premises, he could not be found at home where he allegedly headed after telling the cop that he wanted to have food at home, the sources added. The cops were allegedly under the influence of liquor when the incident took place.
Bagha reportedly escaped with his wife Balwinder Kaur and one year old son.
Bagha, who was wanted by the police in a number of cases related to militancy in the district, had surrendered before the police and was facing various trials. He had also been released on the bail in a murder case and was convicted for life term last year.
The suspended police personnel include Sham Singh (line officer, Batala), Harjit Singh (ASI), Balraj Singh, Karnail Singh and Bikramjit Singh (all constables) and Manjit Kaur (lady constable).
Meanwhile, the police have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the escaped prisoner and a number of police parties had been sent to different places in and around the state.
