JAIPUR, NOV 8: Curfew was imposed on Bhadra town in Hanumanrgarh district of Rajasthan this morning after a young student was killed and five others injured when police fired on a violent mob yesterday.

The mob was protesting against the murder of a teenaged girl at the local Government Senior Secondary School last week. At least 18 policemen were also injured in the mob violence.

Home Minister Gulab Singh Shaktawat told The Indian Express here thisevening that curfew has been imposed to prevent a fresh outbreak of violencefollowing the death of 15-year-old Aslam, who was injured in thefiring, at a hospital at Hisar in the neighbouring Haryana. Shaktawat saidthat Bikaner Divisional Commissioner Chandra Mohan Meena had been directedto conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report within 10days.

According to official sources, Renu Beniwal, a student of Class XII,had turned down the advances of one Ganesh Mali. Enraged, Ganesh turned upat her school last Friday and stabbed her to death. He later committed suicide by consuming insecticide.

A large crowd of a couple of thousand people, including students, led byformer minister and BJP leader Lal Chand Dudi and local Congress leadersSuresh Chaudhry and Satish Mishra, staged a demonstration through the mainmarkets of Bhadra yesterday to demand that the principal and vice-principalof the school as well as the entire staff of the local police station beplaced under suspension for their failure to perform their duties. In the course of the demonstration, the protestors turned violent and startedpelting policemen with stones, who responded with a lathi-charge. Thecrowd gheraoed the police station and started throwing stones. Whenthe lathi-charge failed to bring the situation under control, policefirst fired tear-gas shells and later opened fire from atop the building. Unofficial reports said that the police fired at least 24 rounds. Dudi, Chaudhry and Mishra have been arrested.
