PUNE, Dec 25: The crime detection branch of the police, in a search carried out yesterday at the residence of Umesh Tiwari of Chakan today recovered a .12 bore country-made revolver, and two live cartridges. Tiwari was arrested yesterday for illegal sale of arms. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap on Thursday. Tiwari hails from Rampur, in Uttar Pradesh. He has been in Chakan for the past few months.

A police team had send a decoy to meet Tiwari at Landewadi near Bhosari. Tiwari grew suspicious and tried to run away. The team comprising police inspector Surendra Patil, assistant police inspector Chandrakant Ghodke, head constables Anna Kondhre, Raja Thorwe, Sambhaji Bhoite and Bhagat overpowered and nabbed Tiwari. He has been remanded in three days police custody.

Suspecting that more persons may be involved in manufacture and sale of arms, thorough investigations are being carried out, assistant commissioner of police P N Ingle told media persons.

Besides the country made .12 bore revolver, and two live cartridges, the police recovered a barrel from which at least four .12 bore guns could be manufactured, besides a pickaxe. The recovery of the arms has brought forth questions on the clientele and the purpose for which the arms were being used, ACP Ingle said. Ingle made an appeal for passing any information to the police regarding the sale or dealing of such arms.

The crudely manufactured arms are available at nominal rates, so it was necessary to know the intention of the purchasers, Ingle added. The possibility of manufacture of swords or other sharp weapons by these men was not ruled out. The .12 bore revolver was generally used for hunting animals, but they also could harm humans, Ingle said.
