Police officers who ripped open cartons, found from a stamp scam accused’s bungalow at Magh Sector yesterday, said what they found was far from being a seizure worth billions. Of the 163 cartons examined, only three contained currency notes.
Assistant Director of Enforcement Directorate (Mumbai) Pradeepkumar Bharati said some Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 were found in one carton, while in others, there were foreign currencies of low denominations, mostly from Third World countries.
Bharati says he has found currency notes issued from Berlin in 1910, East Pakistani currency that was given to Haj pilgrims, and notes issued by Yugoslavia, Burma and Kuwait. Some coupons issued by army canteens during the World War II were also found. ‘‘These currency notes are very old and most of it is out of circulation,’’ he said, ‘‘at the most it could be of use to a collector.’’
Bharati said only the RBI can check if the notes are genuine. Pointing to the identification mark on one of the boxes, he said, some of these notes had been legally imported from a bank in Brazil.
