A mob today ransacked the Begu- sarai railway station, attacked the police post, and blocked the highway following the killing of three villagers by an assistant sub-inspector of police.

Officials at the police headquarters said Dinanath Tiwari fired from his official carbine when villagers resisted his attempt to rape a woman last night. The policeman, who was reportedly in an inebriated state, shot a woman and a child on the spot in Baga village. Another man, who sustained injuries, died in the hospital.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when the state was celebrating Chhat puja. Tiwari has been taken into police custody and DGP Nararyan Mishra said in Patna that he would be punished. ‘‘It is a heinous crime and I assure the people of Begusarai that he will be punished,” Mishra said.

However, situation remained tense in the town. Mobs blocked roads and set fire to railway warehouse and attacked the Baga observation post. The police opened fire several times during the day to disperse the agitated mob. All shops remained closed even as the protesters disrupted train and road traffic.

In another incident in Munger, a local RJD leader and three others were killed on their way from Chhat puja on Friday. Police said the killing of Sanjay Yadav, his brother and two others was the result of a gang war in Patam village.
