Welcoming the probe into the alleged forced conversion of some inmates of Central Prison in Pondi-cherry, the state Hindu Munnani today demanded suspension of the jail’s chief superintendent pending completion of the inquiry.

In a statement, Hindu Munnani president V. Selvam said that the jail superintendent should be suspended to enable the prisoners to speak the truth.

A Home Department notification yesterday said Lt Governor K.R. Malkani had ordered a probe by the district judge on the recommendation of the Madras High Court into reports that some life convicts of the jail were transferred to the sub-jail in Karaiakal following their refusal to convert to Christianity.
