BLOEMFONTEIN, NOVEMBER 17: Bolstered by Jacques Kallis’ highest Test score of 153 not out, South Africa hit a commanding 270 for three on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand on Friday.
But controversy accompanied Kallis as he improved on his undefeated 148 against the same opponents in Christchurch in 1998-99 before bad light forced the close 35 minutes early.
On 76 Kallis appeared to be run out when Daryll Cullinan’s straight drive was glanced onto the non-striker’s stumps by bowler Shayne O’Connor with Kallis apparently out of his ground.
Umpire Dave Orchard referred the decision to third umpire Rudi Koertzen. But the two replays available did not prove that Kallis had been dismissed and Koertzen duly gave him not out.
No replays were shown from the line cameras positioned square of the crease.
"I’ve been told by the production staff that the tape recording the feed from the line cameras froze in the machine," a United Cricket Board communications manager told reporters.
The elegant number three’s seventh century saw him at the crease for 324 minutes in which he faced 265 balls and hit 25 fours. With him in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 106 was Neil McKenzie, on 42.
South Africa won the toss, elected to bat and lost their first wicket to the second ball of the match when Boeta Dippenaar edged a delivery from Left-arm fast bowler Shayne O’Connor to Nathan Astle at second slip.
However, Kallis steadied the innings in partnerships of 97 with Gary Kirsten for the second wicket, and 67 with Cullinan for the third.
