MUMBAI, November 6: The days of hiding the progress report from your parents are over. At least for the students of the Utpal Shanghvi School, which is spending around Rs 50 lakh on a project that would make available all the information about a student on his/her PC at home through a dedicated network of computers.
Jayesh P Choksi, the honourary secretary of the Juhu-Parle Education Society that runs this co-education school, said: “We are trying to implement the management theory of SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity and threat) analysis through the Intranet system.” The school will put out information like details of aptitude test and performance results that does not just talk about marks but also the teachers’ evaluation on the network. This again would include not just academics, but overall development where a student’s social interaction also forms part of the evaluation. There will be such detailed analysis as the possible reason behind a student faring well in the school tests but abysmallyin the examination.
The data on the net will also comprise chapters of text books or worksheets done in the school for each class and the student’s detailed progress report which apart from his her grades, examination marks and the teacher’s evaluation will also include his her health file and counsellor’s comments if any.
The teachers too would need to be on their toes. Their progress will be monitored by a board of teachers and results would be fed into the computer. However, all the information will be divided into different access levels. While parents of one student would not have access to other students’ records, teachers’ performance appraisal would be accessible to only a few approved members of the staff and the board of management.
The network will also provide access to a student’s old records. Students on a nostalgia trip would be able to compare their class one scores with that of class nine, and all at the flick of key.
The project, that will cover all students from class kg to class X,will be in place by the next academic year. The entire expenditure of the project will be borne by the school management and the P S Choksi Public Charitable Trust.
Principal Abha Dharam Pal is confident that the project would enhance communication between the school and parents. “Fifty per cent of our students have PCs at home,” he said and added that’s what had prompted the school to think of connecting them through Intranet.
