While the Congress today said mutual settlement on Ayodhya must have the sanction of the courts, BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati made it clear she is not in favour of an out of court settlement for a solution.

Congress chief spokesperson Jaipal Reddy said: ‘‘The court sanction is essential to any out of court settlement…Our stand has been clear and consistent. Either court on merit pronounces its verdict or a settlement receives the sanction of the court.’’

Elsewhere, addressing a press conference, Mayawati asserted the BSP will continue to stick to its original stand, that of a court verdict, to settle the Ayodhya issue. ‘‘My party has always held that it will abide by the court ruling and my government will implement it, but we are certainly not in favour of an out of court settlement.’’ she said.

However, Mayawati said she had no objections to evolving a consensus either on the contentious temple issue, in reply to a pointed question. ‘‘I have no problem if a consensus can be evolved between parties,’’ she replied.
