Congress targeting our men, AGP, AUDF tell Governor

Days after the Congress returned to power in the state, thanks to a pre-poll alliance with the Bodo People’s Progressive Front (BPPF-H), the ruling party has been accused of unleashing a series of violent acts against workers of several opposition parties, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF).

While an AGP delegation today called on Governor Ajai Singh and submitted a memorandum complaining that the Congress was targeting its workers, the AUDF too has leveled similar allegations against the ruling party. ‘‘The Congress has unleashed a reign of terror against our party workers in several districts. We have demanded immediate intervention of the Governor to end the violence,’’ AGP spokesperson Apurba Bhattacharyya said.

AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal claimed at least two of his party workers have been killed at the behest of the Congress party. ‘‘Rowdy elements in the Congress have orchestrated the murder of Ali Akbar, headmaster of Markula HE School, and Ubedul Islam, a science teacher at the Ambari Tinial Bazar HE School in Goalpara,’’ he said in a memorandum submitted to the Governor today.

Meanwhile, police have arrested 11 AGP workers at Chayagaon in Kamrup district following clashes between AGP and Congress workers. Senior AGP leader and former health minister Kamala Kalita had defeated Assam Youth Congress president Rekibuddin Ahmed in the constituency. Kalita blamed the Congress workers for the attacks and alleged that the police were working in a partisan manner at the behest of the ruling party.

Post-poll violence has also be reported from the Bodo-dominated districts of Kokrajhar, Udaluri, Baksa and Chirang, where all 11 seats have gone to the Hagrama Mohilari faction of the BPPF.

Rabiram Narzary, leader of the rival BPPF(R) faction, said workers of the Mohilari faction had started threatening and assaulting a number of party workers even before counting started.
