The Congress demonstrations against VHP leader Pravin Togadia got physical here today when party activists ‘‘blackened’’ his face while he was leaving a public meeting. However, Shiv Sena and BJP leaders — and police — denied this, saying only that ink had been thrown at him.
Togadia, who’s been the target of Congress anger after comments which were construed as an attack on party president Sonia Gandhi, was in the city to address a meeting on cow slaughter.
While he was leaving around 11 p.m., said Joint Commissioner of Police M S Maheshgauri, 25 to 30 Congress workers led by city Congress chief Mohan Joshi surrounded him. A power cut at the time helped the Congress activists’ plan, he said.
Joshi claimed that Congress workers blackened Togadia’s face, but BJP Pune unit general secretary Gopal Chintal said the attempt was foiled and instead ink was thrown at him.
Tension prevailed in the area after Shiv Sena and BJP workers arrived to protest against the attack. Senior police officials were deployed to try and pacify the crowd.
When reports last came in, the police were carrying out the formalities of lodging a complaint; no arrests had been made.
