The arrest of a former Congress leader’s wife could open up a sex scandal touching top politicians and bureaucrats, police say. They are now looking into a diary recovered from her possession that, they say, could prove the link.

Anuradha Singh — the widow of Hari Narayan Singh, a Congress leader of Bhabua — was arrested in a murder case on Friday but investigations revealed that it appeared to be part of a prostitution ring she’d been running for over seven years. City SP O.N. Bhaskar said the names ‘‘are of such big people that nothing can stick on them’’.

Anuradha was brought in for interrogation over the kidnapping and subsequent murder of one Girish Chandra Poddar. He was kidnapped from September 1; his body was recovered six days later from a drum in the Alamganj police station area.

Anuradha confessed to have killed Poddar, according to the police. In court, she stated that Poddar was a regular customer and she had supplied over 300 call girls to him.
