The Congress today was cautious in reacting to the court decision in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

Supporting the Mulayam Sing Yadav government from outside, the party said it was going to ‘‘wait for the Uttar Pradesh government’s response’’ to the order of the Rae Bareli special court which discharged L.K. Advani today.

Party spokesperson Anand Sharma said: ‘‘We have directed the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief to get a copy of the order so that we can study the reasoning or the arguments detailed for acquitting one of the accused while continuing prosecution against the others.’’

The party would be looking for some legal opinion on the order which would also make clear the role of the Uttar Pradesh government and prosecution agencies, in case of an appeal in a higher court.

Sharma said: ‘‘We are going to wait for the response of the UP government, the CBI and the prosecution.’’

On the political impact of the order, he said: ‘‘The fact that senior leaders have been charged shows that there was basis for the allegations made against them.’’

‘‘It is a setback for the BJP which had led the agitation for the demolition and then washed its hands off the issue,’’ he added.

Commenting on Joshi’s resignation, Sharma said: ‘‘The BJP leadership has been stubborn in its opposition to the demand that the chargesheeted ministers must resign.’’

‘‘Instead, they held sensitive posts for the past four years. Joshi’s resignation is just one minister’s belated attempt to reach moral high ground. How is this reaching out to one’s conscious selective?’’ Sharma asked.
