Guwahati, November 28: The Congress party here today reiterated its demand for dismissing the AGP-led government in Assam and imposition of President’s Rule in the state for the government’s alleged failure to protect the lives and properties of the non-Assamese people from the ULFA militants.Addressing a press conference, senior party leader and former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar said the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta government had miserably failed to tackle the situation arising out of the ULFA’s renewed violent activities.

"There is no government worth its name in Assam. Scores of non-Assamese people have been massacred in the state in the past few weeks and the government has remained idle,’ Jakhar, who was here on a two-day tour of the state said.

He alleged that there was a total breakdown of law and order in Assam, and that the only alternative was to dismiss the state government and impose Central rule.

He was joined by two other senior leaders Jagdish Tytler and Mani Shankar Iyer, both of whom said it was surprising that the Mahanta government had not asked for additional security forces to stop th killings.

"The affected families have not been given adequate compensation and the Hindi-speaking people are living under tremendous fear," Iyer said.

Meanwhile, in another press conference held simultaneously, BJP vice-president Jana Krishna told reporters that his party was against the idea of imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

"What is needed is sincere efforts on the part of the state government to bring the situation under a firm grip," he added.

When asked about what stand the main ruling party at the Centre proposed to take in the wake of renewed violence in Assam, the BJP leader said the party would first closely examine the report submitted by a high-level delegation that had visited Assam earlier this month.

The BJP leader however blamed both AGP as well as Congress for the mess and said that while the Congress did have a nexus with the ULFA, the AGP as a ruling party had failed to handle the situation properly.

"But that does not mean the Congress demand for imposition of President’s Rule is justified. The Congress should first realise it had opposed imposition of central rule in Bihar. Before raising a demand for PR, the Congress should withdraw its support to the Bihar government," he remarked.
