As a prelude to the Assembly elections, the Congress and the NCP are busy blaming each other for the birth of militancy in Meghalaya.

The Congress has threatened to pull out of the coalition government as a reaction to NCP general secretary P.A. Sangma’s allegation that Pradesh Congress president S.C. Marak is responsible for the birth of the banned Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) in the Garo hills.

Just three months away from the elections, the ANVC and the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) are providing election fodder for the two major political parties in the state.

Sangma set the ball rolling by alleging that former chief minister Marak, during his tenure, did not properly rehabilitate the surrendered ALMA members, giving rise to discontentment.

Marak, however, said that except for the two ALMA members who escaped from Tura jail, all the others have been looked after and are back in the

mainstream.
