GANDHINAGAR, FEB 28: The Congress is keen to field candidates for both the Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat, which would be falling vacant shortly.

A Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting here this afternoon, which was presided over by Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Amarsinh Chaudhary, proffered the idea that the Central leadership of the party should direct the state unit to contest both the Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant in Gujarat.

The Congress should not allow BJP candidate Sushma Swaraj to get elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat uncontested, Congress Whip Naresh Raval told newsmen here.

Earlier, the Congress had plans to contest only one seat. However, the news that the BJP was planning to field Sushma as its candidate for one of the two seats it was contesting, has made the Congress to give a re-think to the issue.

Congress MLAs also desired that they be consulted by the Central and state party leadership before finalising the names of the candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Asked about the fate of the no-confidence motion sought to be moved by party MLA Udesinh Baria against the Assembly Speaker Dhirubhai Shah, the Congress Whip said that there was no plan to withdraw it.
