While police caught Jalandhar district and session judge R.M. Gupta for allegedly taking bribes, investigations by The Indian Express revealed that even the complainant, Gurwinder Singh Samra of Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, has three cases of cheating against him.
Police sources revealed that Samra reportedly agreed to pay Rs 11 lakh to the judge as he was promised relief in these cases. Yesterday, he went to pay the first instalment of Rs seven lakh to judicial magistrate S.S. Bhardwaj who was allegedly accepting money on Gupta’s behalf.
Jalandhar SSP Varinder Kumar confirmed the three cases against Samra going on in the Jalandhar court. While two cases were registered in April, the third one was registered on May 9. Sources revealed Samra was booked under IPC Sections 304, 406 and 420. Police information about the cases showed complainant Darshan Singh had alleged that Samra took Rs 1.5 lakh on the pretext of treating his backache. Though Singh wasn’t cured, the quack didn’t return his money.
In another case, one Jagir Kaur alleged Samra charged Rs 3.20 lakh from her for ‘‘treating’’ her husband who had met with an accident. However, her husband’ condition deteriorated. Samra then allegedly gave him an injection which resulted in his immediate death. A case was again registered under IPC Sections 304, 406 and 420.
The third case, under Section 406, 420 of IPC, is based on the complaint of one Bakhshish Singh who alleged that he was suffering from pain in the spine so he went to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. He was there for over two months, went through clinical examinations and even an ‘‘operation’’. Samra allegedly took Rs 55,000 but Bakhshish was not cured.
