CHANDIGARH, June 12: The Centre was laying special emphasis on the development of infrastructure in the country and the allocation for it had been raised by 35 per cent, Union Minister of State for Industry, Sukhbir Singh Badal said here today.

Badal, who was here to launch “Spice Quicky”, Punjab’s first SIM card and a product of Spice Telecom, during the first anniversary celebrations of the company, said that the allocation for infrastructure had been raised from Rs 45,000 crore to Rs 61,000 crore

.Complimenting Spice Telecom for investing about Rs 450 crore in Punjab in mobile telecommunication network, he said that there was an information explosion in the world and communication was the top priority for development.

Sean Dexter, managing director of Spice Telecom, said that “Spice Quicky” had been introduced keeping in mind the need of customers who wished to control their expenses. This was ideal for travelling people who could acquire the card at a Spice outlet by filling in an application form, providing proof of identity and making due payment.

“Spice Quicky” comes in a pack, which includes a pre-activated SIM card and is available for Rs 5,100. This includes the cost of the SIM card, activation charges, the stored value of Rs 3,000, an instruction manual and the mobile number. Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Punjab Finance Minister, in his address, said that it was good that the private sector was coming in a big way to help in the progress of the country.

It was the economic power of a nation that determined its sovereignty, its standing in the League of Nations and its ability to protect interests in the international community, the minister added.
