Distance runners will finally get due incentive. The organisers of the Mawana Sugars Indian Open marathon, to be held on December 23 in the Capital, have offered a good package for the country’s athletes.

“From the next edition, the winner of the race will get a ticket to participate in an international competition on foreign soil,” it was announced on Saturday during a media briefing.

Moreover, in the near future, the overall prize money of the race will be enhanced manifold, which will be far more attractive than any other marathon race in the country. “It will be a one of its kind event in the near future,” disclosed Siddharth Shriram, chairman of the firm.

However, the exact amount wasn’t announced.

This year, the overall prize money has been enhanced by Rs 2 lakh. It was Rs 10 lakh in 2006.

In this edition, the winner in the men’s and women’s sections get Rs 2 lakh each. Also, the top 20 in the men’s and top 15 in the women’s race will be entitled to the cash awards.

It was also announced that in coming years, the race will be open to international athletes.

“We want the race to be more competitive,” said Shriram.

This year, since the race is part of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) calendar, all top runners are expected to participate.

The organisers are hoping at least 20,000 participants will line up for the race.

Distance running apart, the organisers are also planning to support grassroots programme in the country. “We are planning to help athletics at the district level in the country,” added Shriram.
