PUNE, June 10: School and college principals in Pune are in a dilemma. If they do not obey the State government’s `directives’ on how to admit students, they invite contempt of court and if they do follow the laid down norms, they are bound to incur the wrath of students and their parents.

The educational institutions have to now conduct admissions to the primary and secondary level again. Moreover, the highly successful centralised procedure adopted for standard XI now stands doomed. Based on a High Court interim order on May 5, the State government drafted two resolutions on June 2 and June 4 directing that admissions from the primary to the college level should be given purely on the basis of academic merit. In fact, at the secondary level itself, 90 per cent of 4000 admission forms filled by students here, were returned today.

Speaking to media persons today, several college principals expressed their ire against the arbitrary manner in which the directives have been thrust on them.

Earlier, admissions were coordinated with the help of the Directorate of Education, Zilla Parishad and Pune Municipal Corporation. Now however, according to the directives, they will no longer be required to do so.
