An 18-year-old girl tried to commit suicide after her college refused to give her a transfer certificate till she cleared her fees.Fazeela, a resident of Cheruvannur, has been admitted to hospital with 55 per cent burns after she set herself afire on August 1. According to her mother, Fathimabi, Fazeela had joined a BSc course at Jamia Nadvia Arts and Science College at Edavanna in Malappuram district. She had paid the first installment of her fees. But after some days, Fazeela discontinued the course as she found it difficult and the journey from Kozhikode to Edavanna cumbersome. She then got admission to a teachers’ training course at Kodiyathur. When her step-father went to the college for a transfer certificate, the authorities said it would be issued only if Rs 23,500 was remitted.College principal Abdul Azeez said he had tried to convince the girl to complete her studies. ‘‘I had contacted the girl and her family several times.She said there were problems in the house, including financial difficulties. I told her it will not be a problem.’’
