June 15: The principal of Lala Lajpatrai College and president of Association of Non-Government Colleges (ANGC) today refused to permit a varsity appointed observer to monitor admissions in the college.

On Monday, the University of Mumbai sent out members of its 18-member panel, appointed to check malpractices in admission procedures of first year Arts, Science and Commerce.

The Association had opposed the panel from the onset and declared that it would not co-operate with the observers. Principal M G Shirahatti said,“We have not furnished information to the observer because we have chosen to adopt a non-cooperation stand.” However, observer A S Manhas maintained that he could monitor admissions and submit his report to Vice-Chancellor Snehalata Deshmukh. Observers are also visiting other colleges including N M College of Commerce and Economics, Vile Parle, and SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion. Pro-vice chancellor Dr Naresh Chandra said observers found no untoward incidents ornon-cooperation from authorities in these colleges.

In a letter to the university dated June 9, the ANGC had said the observer panels had no statutory validity. The VC had stated that no college had raised objections to observers when they were sent last year. “Till the court gives its order on centralisation of admissions, we will continue with the system of observers monitoring admissions. And this had been repeatedly made clear to the college authorities,” Dr Deshmukh had said.
