Sydney, January 23: West Indies avoided an unwanted record low but were still bowled out for 91 in an embarrassingly bad performance as they lost by 47 runs to Zimbabwe in their triangular series limited overs international on Tuesday.
Brian Lara was one of five men who failed to score as the West Indies failed dismally to cope with a swinging ball. Chasing a modest 139 to win, West Indies slumped from 22-1to 25-7 and then 31-8 before Adams (22) and tailender Nixon McLean (40 not out with six fours) added 60 for the ninth wicket in 15 overs. The partnership took them past the lowest ever total in a One-Day International 43 all out by Pakistan vs West Indies in Cape Town in 1993.
Adams’s dismissal, caught and bowled by a diving Mluleki Nkala (3-12) in the 32nd over, brought number 11 batsman Cameron Cuffy to the crease but he was caught in the slips second ball off Nkala for a duck to settle the issue.
Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak, who top-scored with 45 and added 34 for the 10th wicket with Brian Murphy (seven not out), took an impressive four for eight off eight overs including two wickets in two balls. He was named man of the match.
Lara was out once more for a duck on what has been an unhappy tour of Australia. He shuffled across his stumps to be leg before to left-arm swing bowler Bryan Strang (3-15). McLean with some lusty hitting helped carry West Indies away from the humiliation of 31-8 and an ignominious entry in the record books with 19 in one over. That included four successive fours as he took to the bowling of medium-pacer Guy Whittall (0-42 off seven overs). Streak had been all set for his hat-trick when he bowled to spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo in the 13th over after removing Ricardo Powell and Laurie Williams in successive balls. But Nagamootoo managed a single to fine leg to deny Streak.
