Hoping to get a favourable compensation package from government, cellular operators on Tuesday night decided to withdraw their case in the Supreme Court challenging the limited mobile services offered by basic telecom operators.
According to industry sources, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) held its emergency meeting here and passed a resolution to withdraw their case in the Supreme Court.
In fact, it is the condition set by the government asking cellular companies to withdraw litigation before any demand by the cellular industry for compensation could be discussed. Cellular companies have been demanding compensation after basic companies have allowed full mobility using WLL mobile services. Once the cellular industry withdraws its case from the SC, the desk would be cleared for a compensation package for cellular companies.
Anticipating another round of litigations against this package, COAI’s resolution said they shall stand committed to fight along with the government if there was any litigation against this compensation package. The sources said one of the cellular operators, Aircell, decided not to support the resolution.
At the time of announcing merger of basic and cellular licences, government as well as TRAI had said there was no merit for any compensation to the cellular operators as they have been given enough in the past. COAI director general T. V. Ramachandran could not be contacted despite several attempts.
