LEICESTER, MAY 27: Viv Richards was made the coach of the West Indies team after Malcolm Marshall was hospitalised on Thursday owing to a stomach ailment. It was not clear as to what had gone wrong with the former paceman, except that the West Indies stated that he needed abdominal surgery.

Richards who had turned down the job earlier saying he wanted to do television commentary, agreed to fill in till the end of the World Cup. “I will take it as it comes after that,” the former master blaster told mediapersons. “I told them I am there to help them. We have a good team and Brian Lara is in control now. I think we will surprise all those who have been talking only of Pakistan and South Africa.”
