Orissa Government on Friday asked the Lokpal to probe the alleged criminal-police nexus that came to light during the investigation into the murder of coach Biranchi Das, even as seven IPS officers were transferred.

“There are allegations of nexus between criminals and police officers. I have requested the Lokpal to probe the matter,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters. The Government’s decision came after DGP Gopal Chandra Nanda submitted a report on the issue to the Chief Minister.

Nanda later told reporters that he had received a letter from city Police Commissioner Binay Behera suspecting a nexus between the police in the state capital and criminals. Nanda, however, had observed that there was no specific allegation in this regard.

The city police commissioner, on the other hand, had told reporters three days ago that “he would not treat those having nexus with criminals as policemen, but as criminals”. Behera had made allegations of the existence of a nexus between police and criminals while answering a query on why the police failed to arrest gangster Raja Acharya despite knowing that he was the prime accused in Biranchi Das’s murder.

In a letter to the DGP, Behera had also said the killing of Biranchi Das was ‘avoidable’ and Raja should be behind barsbecause of his criminal record.
