Uttaranchal Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari has not been keeping good health for the past fortnight, and this, along with rumours of a leadership change in the state, has sparked off a rat race for the top post.
After a bout of viral fever, which left him bedridden for some days, Tiwari flew to Chandigarh on Saturday for a heart check-up. It was only in March this year that Tiwari, 78, was operated on for a carbuncle on his back. He has also been complaining of rising blood sugar level.
Since the leadership change in Kerala, there have been rumours of a similar action in Uttaranchal, and Tiwari’s ill-health has fuelled speculation. Party sources said a change of guard was expected in the state following the dismal performance of the party in the Lok Sabha elections but not before the Bihar Assembly polls due early next year. However, the sources said, with Tiwari not keeping well, the change is likely to be effected sooner. This has resulted in many state leaders rushing to the national Capital to lobby with the high command for the top post.
According to party sources, front-runners for the post include State PWD Minister and Tiwari protege Indira Hariydesh, state Congress chief Harish Rawat, Satpal Maharaj, Uttaranchal Assembly Speaker Yashpal Arya and brother-sister duo Vijay Bahuguna and Rita Bahuguna Joshhi, president of the Mahila Congress.
