CM warns UP power may go in pvt hands

Fed up of mismanagement in the power sector which has had Uttar Pradesh reeling under unprecedented black-outs this year, Chief Minister Mayawati today threatened to privatise the sector unless things improved. ‘‘If officials do not improve supply and check theft, they will face the music,’’ she warned.

She said that she had promised to ease the power crisis in the state immediately after taking over as CM, but officials had let her down.

‘‘Officials have failed to improve supply and also to collect dues from big defaulters. At some places they have openly helped power thieves,’’ she alleged.

Reacting to her threat, the Power Engineer’s Federation announced that they would oppose any privatisation move tooth and nail.
