Differences between Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and his deputy Chhagan Bhujbal has come to the fore once again with the duo taking potshots at each other through the media.
It began with Shinde’s response to the demand for Bhujbal’s dismissal for the Telgi scam. ‘‘My situation is like Vajpayeeji’s who could not touch Fernandes’s portfolio even though he wanted to,’’ he told journalists on Tuesday in a loaded response that left little to the imagination.
The chief minister, who had just attended a meeting at Raj Bhavan to discuss the issue with Governor Mohammad Fazal, has obviously not patched up with Bhujbal since the two clashed over the appointment of the DGP earlier this month.
Shinde, who made his grouse public last week at a press meet, is sore about the fact that Bhujbal doesn’t consult him on key decisions concerning the Home department. But he cannot even complain since the Congress and the NCP have a pact not to interfere with each other’s running of various departments. ‘‘It is a coalition government and there are some decisions you just cannot take,’’ Shinde grumbled.
Bhujbal, when he heard about the chief minister’s reaction, shot back: ‘‘Of course, ours is a coalition government but two junior ministers in my department are from the Congress (Kripashankar Singh and Rajendra Darda) and they brief the CM regularly.’’
When asked if he thought Shinde was angry over his handling of the Home department, Bhujbal replied: ‘‘If he wants to take over the department, I will happily hand it over, but will he give his departments to us?’’
Sources said Shinde has directly summoned senior police and Home officers to take stock of the situation arising out of the arrests made in the Telgi case before meeting the Governor.
