Bloemfontein, November 19: South African fast bowler Allan Donald took his 300th Test wicket as his team forced New Zealand to follow on 242 runs behind on the third day of the first Test against New Zealand at Springbok Park on Sunday.
New Zealand were all out for 229 at tea in reply to South Africa’s 471 for nine declared.
Shaun Pollock was the main destroyer, taking four for 37, but the focus was on Donald, playing in his home town.
When tailender Shayne O’Connor was given out lbw to Donald’s sixth delivery with the second new ball, he threw his arms in triumph and his teammates ran to congratulate him. His feat was marked by three blasts from a cannon placed near the boundary edge.
Donald, 34, became the first South African and the 15th player worldwide to reach the landmark. It came in his 63rd Test. The World’s leading Test wicket taker is Courtney Walsh of the West Indies who has taken 483 wickets in 122 Tests. Donald said he planned to continue playing until the 2003 World Cup and had his sights set on 400 Test wickets.
New Zealand subsided after leftarm spinner Nicky Boje broke a spirited wicket stand of 79 in 71 minutes between captain Stephen Fleming and Nathan Astle.
Fleming was bowled by Boje’s fifth ball of the match. Astle was out for 37 four balls later, playing a loose shot to be caught at second slip off Makhaya Ntini.
