SRINAGAR, DEC 3: The biggest challenge that the Border Security Force (BSF) had to face during counter-insurgency operations in the Valley was to ensure that the people did not suffer loss of life and property while nailing down militants, Inspector General of BSF, C M Bhat told an assembly of jawans and officers on the 32nd Raising Day of the country’s premier para-military force.

Addressing jawans from the 16 battalions of the BSF deployed in Srinagar at the Sector HQs at Pantha Chowk on Monday, Bhat expressed his wholehearted faith in the ability of his jawans to lay down their lives for the country whenever the occasion demanded. “Four hundred and thirty eight personnel of the BSF have already died in counter-insurgency operations in the Valley,” Bhat said.

Stressing upon the need to win over the local people, Bhat exhorted the jawans to “treat them as your own people so that nobody can accuse the BSF of being intruders in the Valley.”

Delving upon the variety of operations the BSF has undertaken since its inception, Bhat said, “The force has fought in the 1971 war, undertaken anti-Naxalite operations and played a vital role in guarding VIPs”.

Earlier, Bhat gave away the state reward money of Rs 50,000 to the 24 Battalion commanded by S S Gandhi. The battalion led the operation in January last when a self-styled company commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen was caught and a large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from Nawakadal in Srinagar.

The IG’s Commendation card was awarded to 10 BSF personnel, D S Pathania, Nilesh Kumar, R N Singh, Hemant Kumar, K Umesh, Asim Biswas, Sube Singh, Lal Chand and Vijay Singh.

Bhat also honoured the memory of head constable Mohammad Shaban Khancha by presenting Rs 500 and a shawl to his widow, Haja Akhtar, who hails from Bijwan, Anantnag district.
