The Madras High Court witnessed unruly scenes today as several groups clashed with each other in its premises, leaving several people injured. Immediately after Justice R. Balasubramaniam adjourned till November 17 the bail application of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati without passing any order, groups owing allegiance to the seer and believed to belong to the RSS and Hindu Munnani raised slogans against the judge and the judiciary for having left the seer to languish in jail for four more days.
The first clash broke out when some advocates objected to the behaviour of the slogan-shouting groups. Three advocates—identified as Kannadasan, Madhavaram Senthil Kumar and Samuel—were injured. They later lodged a complaint with the police.
In another incident, devotees of the seer and members of the Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kuzhu, who stood holding placards with slogans against the Shankara mutt and the pontiff, pelted stones at each other, leaving several people from both sides injured.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court Advocate’s Association (MHAA) president S. Prabakaran condemned the attack on the advocates at the high court premises. He demanded the arrest of Vinayagar Murali, said to be a member of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, and others who perpetrated violence on the lawyers. The high court was not a place to settle religious scores, he added. Unless appropriate action was taken against the persons who assaulted the lawyers, the MHAA would stage agitations from Tuesday, he warned and appealed to the police to provide adequate protection to the advocates.
