Singur was back on the boil as violence erupted on Friday when women from adjoining villages of Baraberi, Purbapara and Bajamelia tried to trespass the restricted Tata Motors factory premises. About five policemen and five villagers were injured in the clash.

At around 8.30 am, villagers, led mostly by womenfolk, started pelting stones at the policemen posted at the Tata Motors premises. After the unrest subsided, another round of violence occurred at 10 am and continued till noon. Police had to resort to firing of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Kalyan Mukhopadhyay, SDPO, Singur, said: “We do not rule out villagers receiving serious injuries when hit by tear gas shells.”

Nabamita Bag, a villager, was seriously injured by a tear gas shell and was taken to Singur Gramin Hospital. According to the Singur Krishi Jamin Raksha Committee, thousand of people assembled in front of the wall of the factory on Friday morning. The situation worsened and villagers became restive when a woman was injured in the tear gas firing.
