
The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has urged leaders in corporate, social and political circles and in the government to plant groves of 50 indigenous trees in various protected areas to mark the golden jubilee of India’s independence.
In Mumbai, BNHS has invited citizens to plant trees at its Conservation Education Centre, Goregaon (E), near Film City on August 14 between 9.30 am 10.30 am. Also those who would like to plant a tree to mark an auspicious occasion in their lives or in memory of their dear ones can also sponsor a tree for Rs 2,000 which will be utilised towards the maintenance of the tree for the first five years until it is able to look after itself.
Tiger skin recovered
The city police have arrested two persons and recovered tiger skin and nails worth over Rs 1.5 lakh at Dharavi today. Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap to arrest the duo. One of the police officers posing as a customer of tiger skin met the duo and arrested them yesterday.
Frigate turned to museum ship
A 19th century frigate — D Fernando II and Gloria — built on the west coast of India is currently being restored by the Portuguese government to act as a museum ship in the Tagus river off Lisbon. The ship was the last Portuguese frigate to be built in Daman, the former Portuguese colony, which is now a part of union territory on the Gujarat coast. The Portuguese government has plans to display the vessel at the Expo’98 exhibition at Lisbon which will later continue as a museum vessel. The 62-metre-long vessel made of Indian teak made the famous `Carreira da India’ voyages between India and Lisbon for over 33 years.
