The CID team probing the Madhumita Shukla case today admitted its failure in collecting the blood samples of the poetess’s kin to match it with her foetus sent for test to the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnosis (CDFD) in Hyderabad.

While admitting that without blood samples it would be difficult to match it with the foetus, a senior CID official said: ‘‘Science has other means to find out whether the foetus sample sent for DNA fingerprinting was Madhumita’s.’’

‘‘Madhumita’s mother Shanti Devi refused to provide her blood sample,’’ he said. The CID official maintained that they were taking the case seriously and only ‘‘genuine’’ sample of the foetus was sent for the DNA test.

The foetus sample of the slain poetess was sent to CDFD on May 24. The CDFD said it would take at least five weeks to analyse the sample as the CID had not moved the court for an early test.

When the sample was dispatched to the CDFD, a controversy had erupted over whether the foetus should have been sent to it or to the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). Local police, who were handling the case earlier, had said the CCMB was a better choice. ‘‘The CCMB is better equipped to handle samples covered by a layer of contaminants due to poor preservation,’’ a police official said.
