Parallel investigations by the CBI and CID into the theft of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel medal have little to show besides the increasing hostility between the two agencies.
The theft from the museum in Santiniketan’s Uttarayan complex was reported on March 25. The CID was miffed as CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya brought in the CBI to carry on a probe on its own.
Now, the CBI, with 16 investigators camping at Santiniketan, seems to have ended up creating more mysteries that it has solved. On Sunday, the CBI found that three objects listed by the university as ‘‘missing’’ were still in the museum. Two bronze medals and a bamboo box covered with silver plates — items gifted to Tagore — had not been stolen during the heist.
The ‘‘discovery’’ baffled everybody, including the CID, which has been running its own investigation. CID officials are peeved with the CBI. ‘‘I don’t know what they are doing apart from creating more mysteries,’’ said a senior CID inspector. ‘‘We are running a parallel investigation and I know we will crack the case.’’ He pointed out that they have more at stake — being a local agency, it is ‘‘answerable’’ to Tagore’s followers across the state. ‘‘We are sure that those things have not come to the market otherwise we would have got wind of it,’’ he said.
