MARGAO, FEBRUARY 9: Churchill Brothers will strive to avenge their 3-1 defeat to State Bank of Travancore (SBT) when they lock horns against them on Thursday in the fourth edition of the National Football League.

Speed is SBT’s forte with medios Shabeer Ali, Suresh Babu and Lanel Thomas playing in tandem to keep their attack moving. Forwards Abdul Hakkim, Shaji and Ignatious have troubled rival defence and Churchill defence, which tends to get complacent at times, will have to be extra vigilant.

Churchill, who are one point behind league topper Mohun Bagan (28 points), played well in the last match against Tollygunge Agragami which they won 2-0. They will have to maintain the same form as they cannot afford to lose any points if they are to stay in title race.

Churchill have received a setback with dependable striker Andriy Malchevsky sitting out on Thursday after he received his second yellow card against Tollygunge. Earlier, he received the yellow against BSF. Francis Silveira, who has an ankle injury, is a doubtful starter.

Churchill’s fortunes will depend on the performance of their mid-fielders. Mykola Shevchenko, who has been the driving force along with Rocky Baretto and Mario Soares, will need good support from out-of-form Somatai Shaiza to cut off the supply line.

Churchill coach Danny McLennan said his boys have maintained good home record winning five and drawing one out of the six matches played and hoped that they win on Thursday before they play their crucial away matches against Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and FC Kochi which will decide their fate.
