Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi on Friday extended his party Praja Rajyam’s support for the formation of a separate Telangana state if the Centre came up with such a proposal.

The announcement, which is expected to alter political equations in Andhra Pradesh ahead of Assembly elections, was made by the filmstar during his road show in the Telangana heartland.

“It is for the Central Government to take a decision on creation of Telangana state. If it comes up with such a proposal, our party will not stand in the way,” he told a gathering in this backward Telangana town in Karimnagar district.

Acknowledging the “sentiments” of people, Chiranjeevi said, “I know the people of this region are overwhelmingly in favour of a separate state. I respect your feelings. If you are convinced that creation of a separate state will ensure rapid development, I am with you.”

The actor’s announcement was greeted with loud applause from a massive gathering. His fans soon burst crackers and danced with joy.

“Let me declare here and now that my party will support if the Centre comes forward with a proposal to create Telangana state,” the actor announced.

The Telangana region had suffered decades of neglect and discrimination, he said, adding the statehood movement reflected the “self-respect” of the people.

With Telangana emerging as a key issue ahead of elections, Chiranjeevi’s endorsement of the statehood demand is expected to speed up the process of political re-alignment in the state.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi and the Left parties are keenly watching the impact of the actor’s road show in the region before deciding on poll alliances.
