HONG KONG, February 8: Rescuers today called off their search for some 30ÿChineseÿseamen missing after their ship, the Fei Cui Hai, sank in the South China Sea.

The ship went down yesterday after sending a distress signal while sailing from India to the southern Chinese city of Nanjing, government radio here reported.

Insurers Lloyds of London saidÿthe search operation was called off this morning, after only four of the 34-member crew had been picked up.

According to one survivor, only five crew members had been able to abandon the ship with their lifejackets before the 32,000 tonne vessel sank.

Lloyds quoted the captain of one of the two ships that initially responded to the distress signal as saying there wasÿno longer any hope of finding more survivors.
